Negligence  is a the concept used to seek compensation for injuries (not accidents). Negligence is a type of “tort” (also known as a civil wrong).  However, the concept is sometimes used in criminal law matters as well.

"Negligence" can be generally thought of as conduct that falls short of what a reasonable person would do, to protect another person or their property from foreseeable risks of harm.

An injured person seeks to recover their damages from the one that negligently casued the injury.  Damages are to compensate for the harm.  Damages may involve compensation for harm to the body, property, mental well-being, financial status, or intimate relationships.
